Fears of Steele Dossier 2.0 as Speaker Johnson Looks to Extend FISA into 2024 Election Season

Speaker Mike Johnson has agreed to extend Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) inside the National Defense Authorization Act, meaning the same secret courts that granted warrants to spy on Trump’s 2016 campaign based on the disproven Steele dossier will be fully funded just in time for the 2024 election. Many are questioning why Speaker Johnson has not been much different from Speaker McCarthy. The answer to this question lies with the Congressional Leadership Fund, a PAC that jumped support from McCarthy to Johnson right when Johnson became Speaker. Interestingly, FEC records show the biggest donors to the Congressional Leadership Fund are never-Trump Ken Griffin and Paul Singer, the Washington Free Beacon owner who funded Fusion GPS, the organization that wrote the disproven Steele Dossier. All signs point to a 2016 repeat.

On October 30th, shortly after becoming House Speaker, Mike Johnson endorsed the Congressional Leadership PAC, which was previously supporting Kevin McCarthy.

Thursday morning, Loomer reported that Speaker Johnson struck a deal to include Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) in the National Defense Authorization Act, guaranteeing the FISA courts will be funded for the 2024 election.

FEC records show Paul Singer donated $1 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a PAC that supported then-Speaker McCarthy and now Speaker Johnson. During the 2016 GOP Primary, Singer hired the firm Fusion GPS to dig up dirt on President Trump. Following the GOP Primary, Fusion GPS took their work and gave it to Hillary Clinton, who then turned the fake opposition research into the fake Steele Dossier, which included false statements like Donald Trump likes to get urinated on by Russian hookers.

The Steele Dossier was then brought to secret FISA courts, the same court Speaker Johnson is pledging to fund. The Obama FBI was able to obtain a warrant to spy on the Trump campaign. The story grew from there as the Steele Dossier was also key in launching the debunked Trump-Russia Collusion probe.

Another 2023 donor to the Congressional Leadership Fund is Ken Griffin. FEC records show on June 30th, 2023 Griffin donated $1 million to the PAC.
